Let’s face it, organizing and hosting an at-home kids birthday party is sometimes stressful. My parents and I occasionally think back and laugh about my 7th birthday party. We actually call it ‘the birthday party from hell’. At the time, I successfully convinced my parents that I was old enough to entertain and take care of my guests all on my own. Boy, was I ever wrong! Pretty much everything went wrong. Nonetheless, I thank my parents for [blindly] trusting my 7 year old judgment and letting me assert my independence.

This brings me to today’s article: the 9 best kids at-home birthday party ideas. Although before beginning, I would like to share some wisdom. If your child takes the initiative and decides to organize their own party, applaud and encourage their sense of leadership and creativity. However, I’m a big supporter in being prepared for every possible outcome. Therefore, it’s a good idea to have a secret backup plan just in case something goes wrong so Super mom can save the day and can make sure everyone will have a positive experience!

That being said, and without further ado, here are some great at-home kids birthday party activities to entertain your child and their guests:

1. Treasure Hunt

Who doesn’t love a treasure hunt? This party activity gets kids moving around and engages their brains. Moreover, this activity can be adapted to any age group. For kids under 5 years old, make visual clues like photos or drawings that help lead them to the next clue location. For kids that can read, write down a riddle or have them perform a challenge in order to get to the next clue. If you’re not sure how to go about it here’s a little guide.

2.  Dancing

Get out your dance moves and teach the kids a fun and easy dance choreography! Don’t know any? Not a problem. Check out Saskia Dansschool’s youtube channel. They’re a dance school in the Netherlands that upload fun and easy dance fitness choreographies for kids and adults. If you happen to be an amateur videographer, why not record everyone doing the routine in different locations (your backyard, the living room, your driveway, etc) and make a video clip like montage?

3. Escape Game

If you’re creative and crafty, you can create your own escape game from scratch. Read this article by Fundraising Mums for some times on how to create your own. Conversely, if you’re not, tons of websites like a href=”https://lockpaperscissors.co/”>Lock Paper Scissors offer premade escape game kits. All you have to do is set it up and you’re ready to go!

4. Light Painting

Most people don’t realize this, but this is a fairly simple activity. All you need is:

  • Flashlights, string lights, colored lights, etc
  • A camera that that can have a slow shutter speed or an app that allows you to slow the shutter speed on your phone

Once you’ve gathered everything, check out this simple light painting guide. This activity is fun for people of all ages.

5. Mummy Wrap

I’m kind of disappointed I never got to do this as a child and I’m actually thinking about doing this as an adult. What is a mummy wrap? It’s when you take toilet paper or crepe paper and roll it around a person to make them look like a mummy. Kids love disguising themselves! Once everyone is mummified, why not have a mummy dance party or do a photoshoot on an egyptian themed catwalk?

6. Photoshoot

Speaking of photoshoots, why not have your very own celebrity red carpet photoshoot? Buy a few fun accessories at the dollar store, get the kids to dress up and have them walk the red carpet as you take their photo! Here are 6 tips for taking great pictures of children.

7. Singing

Get the party started with a karaoke machine! If you don’t have your own, you can usually rent one from your local party store. If some kids are brave or want to show off their talents, they can sing alone, if not, have the kids sing their favorite songs together!

8. Art

Does your child love making and creating things? Then why not plan some art activities! Paint with bubbles, blindfold the artist while someone tells them what to draw, the possibilities are endless! Here are 10 fun art party activities for kids.

9. Classic games

They’re classics for a reason! In case you forgot about them, here are some kid party activities that you probably played in your own youth:

  • Pin the tail on the donkey
  • Piñata
  • Musical chairs/statues
  • Limbo
  • Egg toss
Finally, when the day of the party arrives, don’t forget to take a breath and have a bit of fun! Happy Birthday Partying!
