It’s almost been a year since the Covid-19 pandemic hit the globe and instantly changed our lives. Even where it’s allowed, parents are still hesitant about the idea of having social gatherings to celebrate kids’ birthdays. While some have decided to skip it altogether, others have taken the plunge of organizing a socially distant birthday party.
Slime-making has been around for a long time, but it had a burst of popularity in the late 2010s. It got so inventive that a simple slime recipe turned into so much more. While the recipe process can be unnerving, the truth is that playing with slime is beneficial for kids. Not only is it an amazing, tactile sensory experience, it also promotes mindfulness, helps children focus, encourages them to play independently, promotes fine motor skills, and is calming.
You know that we, at My Studio Party, are big fans of encouraging creativity in kids with music and art. That being said, science and technology, an important part of today’s society, can also help inspire creativity. We’re currently at a point in time when our economy is constantly moving towards technological-based industries. As a result, the demand for people proficient in STEM – science, technology, engineering and mathematics – is increasing. Hence, so is the likelihood of your child working in one of these industries later in life.
Feel like you’re always looking for new ways to nurture your kid’s creativity? We have an idea that should keep you going for a while. Increase their creativity with light painting! Before continuing, I would just like to mention that even though I’m an adult, I absolutely love painting with light. In fact, I’m pretty sure anyone who gives it a try will love it, adults and kids alike.
Looking back on my childhood, I’m glad I was exposed to music and art because it taught me valuable lessons that I don’t believe I would have learned otherwise. I took piano lessons for 15 years, and aside from the occasional vacation, I practised every single day. This is how I learned that it was possible to reach my goals through practise, persistence and determination. It was also a way for me to safely let out my emotions. For instance, if I was angry or frustrated, I’d play fast and loud. Conversely, if I was sad, I would pour that emotion into a slower piece.
Do you have fond memories of playing outdoors as a kid? Well I know I do! Sometimes my brothers and I would play cops and robbers with our neighbours and other times we would go on weird little adventures like trying to capture stray neighbourhood cats (we never actually succeeded!). Jenna, one of My Studio Party’s dance facilitators, also has fond memories of outdoor activities. In the summer, she would often go camping with her family, climb trees or go horseback riding through fields and forests! Doesn’t that sound amazing?
As mentioned in one of my previous articles, Why music and art are important for kids’ development, I took piano lessons for 15 years. Therefore, you won’t be surprised when I say that I fully believe in the benefits of learning a musical instrument. (In case you didn’t know, vocal cords are also considered a musical instrument!) To name a few, I gained self-confidence, I had an outlet for my emotions and I learned that I could achieve my goals through hard work, persistence and determination. That being said, don’t just take my word for it! Other people at My Studio Party such as Rob, an incredible guitarist and studio engineer, and Claire, a singer-songwriter and recent ukulele player, have also agreed that music has tremendously benefited them!
Let’s face it, organizing and hosting an at-home kids birthday party is sometimes stressful. My parents and I occasionally think back and laugh about my 7th birthday party. We actually call it ‘the birthday party from hell’. At the time, I successfully convinced my parents that I was old enough to entertain and take care of my guests all on my own. Boy, was I ever wrong! Pretty much everything went wrong. Nonetheless, I thank my parents for [blindly] trusting my 7 year old judgment and letting me assert my independence.
